What should I know before my newborn's first car ride?
Check the seat instructions, plan for the destination and know where you can stop safely if your baby needs attention.
The short answer
Before a trip, read the car seat and vehicle instructions, confirm the seat is installed and prepare a safe sleep space at the destination. Ask a professional if you’re unsure about fit.
Check the seat and vehicle instructions
The AAP recommends using a rear facing car seat that is installed at the correct angle according to its instructions. Check the harness fit and read both the car seat manual and vehicle manual before your first trip.
If you’re unsure how the seat should fit, ask a certified child passenger safety technician or another qualified local service. An online article can’t check the installation or confirm that a particular seat fits your baby and vehicle.
Plan for feeding and comfort stops
Think through where you can stop safely if your baby needs a feed, nappy change or comfort break. Never breastfeed while the car is moving. If you travel with another adult, agree who will help the baby and who will focus on driving.
For longer trips, follow advice from the car seat manufacturer and your baby's care team. They can account for your baby's age, health and any special travel considerations.
Prepare a safe sleep place at the destination
A car seat is for travel, not routine sleep after you arrive. The AAP says to move a sleeping baby to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back as soon as possible. Arrange a suitable crib, bassinet or play yard before leaving home.
Before travelling, make sure the destination has a safe sleep space ready for your baby.
