What should I do if my baby falls asleep in the car seat?

Car seats are for travel. When you reach your destination, move a sleeping baby to a firm, flat sleep surface as soon as you can.

The short answer

The AAP says a car seat isn’t a routine sleep space outside the car. When the trip is over, move a sleeping baby to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back as soon as possible.

Use the car seat for travel

A properly installed, correctly used car seat protects a baby during travel. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that if a baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller, swing or carrier, move them to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back as soon as possible when the trip is over.

A car seat isn’t a routine sleep space outside the vehicle. Don’t place the seat on a table, counter, sofa or other raised surface, and follow the seat manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.

Plan for the destination

Before a trip, make sure there will be a suitable crib, bassinet or play yard at the destination. For a longer drive, ask your baby's care team and follow the car seat manufacturer's advice about breaks and fit.

If you travel with another adult, agree who will sit near the baby or help check the harness and comfort. Never feed a baby while the car is moving. Pull over somewhere safe before attending to the baby.

Ask for help with fit or breathing concerns

If your baby's chin appears slumped toward the chest, the harness doesn’t fit as the manufacturer describes, or you notice a breathing concern, stop when safe and seek appropriate help. A doctor or certified car seat technician can answer questions about fit.
